“Destinations”
Richard Strauss’ timeless Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare opens the 2018–2019 season for the TU Wind Symphony, followed by an evening of repertoire celebrating various destinations. Hammersmith, op 52 by Gustav Holst pays homage to the London district, while Michael Daugherty’s Lost Vegas is a tribute to the iconic images of Las Vegas. Mason Bates’ Rusty Air in Carolina begins the second half of the concert by weaving electronics seamlessly into this evocative piece for winds. The concert will close with two Charles Ives transcriptions. “The Alcotts” is the third movement of his Concord Sonata for piano, a reflection on images of Concord, Massachusetts. Country Band March is a raucous compilation of over a dozen songs meant to depict the pandemonium of a band performing at a town fair.
